End Cement: Pressure campaign against climate killers

3–5 minutes

Written by Ulrich Wohland, movement worker at WfGA.

What causes the biggest CO2 emissions? No, not car transport, not the air industry or the steel industry, but the construction sector. Approximately 40%, according to the Architects for Future, go back to the construction sector and about 10% directly to the construction industry. ‘End cement"We started a regional campaign with supra-regional broadcasting in Heidelberg in spring. These include "Fridays for Future", "Last Generation" and "Extinction Rebellion", the "Architects for Future", as well as the workshop for non-violent action. We meet weekly in the office of the workshop at the Heidelberger Welt-Haus and regularly in working groups.

Why cement?

Cement is a fossil raw material. Just like oil, gas and coal. limestone, the most important ingredient for cement, is a fossil(!) Raw material. In the production of cement at about 1400 degrees, amounts of energy are needed, mostly from plastic, which we previously collected in the valuables tonne. In addition, there are a number of old tires, sewage sludge and old oil, to ceremonies. Nevertheless, the cement industry has so far managed to remain under radar. We want to change that. "Heidelberg Materials", formerly "Heidelberg cement", is currently the largest CO2 issuer among the DAX groups, even before RWE and EON. There have been a variety of actions in Heidelberg for years and now the whole thing is poured into a long-term campaign.

What's planned, what's going on?

A list of signatures to the municipal council is on the way. Heidelberg likes to be a climate-conscious model community that wants to be climate-neutral by 2040. How is this supposed to happen if the largest producer of CO2 in Heidelberg is based? Please go the

and sign. "Heidelberg Materials" is a big sponsor of cultural events, for example at the Heidelberg Spring a big event. We want to question the cultural sponsorship. "We all love culture but who loves CO2?" ultursponsoring as greenwashing. "Heidelberg Materials" refuses to set up a compensation fund and commission an independent report on human rights. As long as this does not continue to happen, this group should not be a benefactor on urban cultural events such as the Heidelberg Spring.

The worldwide destruction

"Heidelberg Materials" is very active in Western Sahara and Togo, Palestine and Indonesia. There the Samin population has been fighting for 10 years against the destruction of their livelihoods by "Heidelberg Materials". Working with groups from the Global South, we are part of the campaign. The company acts illegally and illegally
he is accused of landgrabbing, expulsion of indigenous groups, exploitation of workers, breaking international law and cooperation with dictatorships. We call for independent reporting
on human rights and climate issues. The limestone freight is increasing worldwide. More and more sand is needed. Very special sand, mostly on beaches and islands. These sand sources are
limited. Thanks to a global sandmafia, all ecosystems are currently disappearing.

Time for the construction transition

Watching – it is worth it!

A first demo on the topic was already organized together with FfF in Heidelberg. For the coming year, we plan further demonstrations and a climate and action camp to which we mobilize nationwide. "Heidelberg Materials" (Recommendation: Material To Build Our Future) naturally has a
Solution for all problems: The storage of CO2 under the Earth, the so-called CCS method – Carbon Capture Storage. This is even extremely energy-intensive, requires pipelines of 5,000 km alone in Germany or corresponding conveyors as columns on the Autobah
nen. Current estimates assume that only about 20% of CO2 in cement production can be stored in this way in 2050, then we have nothing more for the steel industry and the energy industry and and and and.

Violent action

Unlike the current peace movement, the philosophy of freedom of violence and civil disobedience is firmly anchored in the "climate groups". The campaign and movement philosophy of Bill Moyer, Gene Sharp and Erica Chenoweth also fall on fertile soil. Thanks to
Orientation to "follow the science", we do not meet any query philosophy here. The criticism of the parties at the federal level is also firmly anchored. The Greens are a huge disappointment in the climate for the most recent activists.
