Theories of Change – Understanding Social Change

Together with Jan Gerber, on February 21, 2023 we dealt with the topic "Theories of Change – Understanding Social Change". The event took place at the seminar series "Moving Movements" in which we exchanged strategically, across movements.

Theories of change are therefore a tool or a method to make ideas, thoughts and goals visible to change reality. They can be used both for complex issues and for clearer objectives. The process, the formation and the result are of great importance. Theories of change can help to avoid conflicts in the longer term and to recognize empty spots in one's own thinking, as well as to provide the basis for helpful discussions within one's own movement.

With the help of a practical example of Extinction Rebellion, Jan Gerber was able to present the core ideas and the individual (possible) steps more precisely. It should be stressed here that the individual steps can be shortened or divided longer:

1. Analysis of the problem: What is the problem?
Two. Desired End Condition / Vision
3. Objective: What is your 'concrete' goal? What do you want to achieve?
4. Incited change: What must change to achieve the goal?

8. Success: How do you know you won?

More information about the contents can be found in the Power Point Presentation read.

We thank Jan Gerber for this valuable input and all participants for the very stimulating exchange!
